During years of clinical work with autistic and neurodivergent children, I began noticing patterns that behavior alone — observed in isolation — could not account for.
The same person could access communication, interaction, learning, or participation at one moment, and lose part of that access at another. What appeared as inconsistency began to look different when I observed what had occurred before, what the system was already sustaining, and how much time it needed to recover.
Autism was not the limit of the work. It was the place where certain questions became impossible to ignore.
Autistic experience can involve differences in sensory and interoceptive processing, communication, predictability, social demands, and adaptation. These differences interact with the conditions a nervous system is navigating across time.
Within those interactions, dynamics of load, activation, access, and recovery may become especially visible — not because they are exclusive to autism, but because autistic experience can make certain relationships easier to observe.
Variability within autistic experience is wide. What the framework describes are observable relationships between conditions, organization, and access — not uniform characteristics of any population. Observing that certain dynamics become visible under certain conditions is not the same as claiming those conditions produce a particular organization.
The framework does not change. What changes is what we can observe within each element when reading it through autistic experience.
Not only "the environment." Conditions include everything the system is navigating before any new event arrives.
The pattern formed by concurrent demand, activation dynamics, regulatory margin, and recovery across time — under these conditions, at this moment.
What remains available from that organization, under those conditions, at this moment.
What becomes externally observable. What we see does not necessarily tell us where the process began — or what it cost to arrive there.
The same four observational constructs that allow us to read any nervous system can be used to explore autistic organization. What changes is not the language — it is what becomes observable when that language is used in this context.
An observable demand may be only part of what the system is processing at any given moment. Sensory, communicative, social, motor, predictive, and internal demands can coexist in ways that are not immediately visible to the observer.
What appears to be a small demand may reach a system that is already managing far more than is visible from the outside.
Under certain conditions, activation may increase at a rate that differs from what the observer expects based on the visible demand. This is not a general claim about autistic people.
It is an invitation to observe how this system responds, under these conditions, when this signal arrives — rather than assuming the response should be proportional to what the observer perceives as the magnitude of the event.
Two people may appear to be doing the same thing while having very different margins available for absorbing additional demand. The same person may have different margins at different moments of the day, the week, or the year.
Reading margin is not reading capacity. It is reading how much available range remains under these specific conditions.
Not simply whether visible behavior settled. The question is how completely prior activation resolved before the next demand arrived.
When recovery is incomplete, something may persist and participate in subsequent organization. The system may then encounter new demands from a different baseline and with less margin available — even when no new event has occurred.
A person may communicate fluently at one moment and be unable to access language later. May tolerate an environment one day and need to leave the next. May complete a task yesterday with relative ease and need significantly more support today.
Functional variability does not necessarily demonstrate a change in capacity. It may reflect changes in conditions, in present organization, and in the system's recent history.
A person may sustain observable participation while the physiological cost of doing so increases. The fact that behavior continues to be possible does not tell us how much it is costing to sustain it.
Visible participation does not equal visible cost.
The framework proposes that sustained adaptive effort may accumulate load even when there are no evident behavioral signs of difficulty. This is a theoretical integration the framework proposes — not a claim about a directly demonstrated mechanism.
And it works in both directions: visible participation does not demonstrate cost, and its absence does not demonstrate there is none. What the observation alone cannot tell us is whether cost exists and, if it does, what produced it.
What changes is not only the theory. What changes is the question from which observation begins — and with it, what becomes possible to consider.
This shift does not eliminate the question about behavior. It places it within a broader process that includes conditions, organization, and the system's history — and that makes it possible to intervene somewhere other than only on what is already visible.
Autism is the clinical origin of this framework, not its limit.
It was through working with autistic people that certain relationships between conditions, organization, access, and participation began to become especially visible.
But the processes the framework attempts to read belong to human nervous systems.
What changes across people and contexts is not the architecture of reading — it is the conditions, the history, the organization, and the way all of this becomes visible.
Autism did not make the framework universal. It gave the framework the questions from which it grew.
The same framework, read from the system in its broader form.
