For Families
Understand access, participation, and support through the lens of nervous system organization.
You've noticed something that doesn't quite fit the usual explanations. Your child can do something one day but not the next. A transition that worked last week doesn't work today. Communication varies from moment to moment. Patience is available in one instant and gone the next. Something is happening beneath the behavior — something about how systems organize themselves under different conditions.
This framework offers a way to read those patterns. Not to fix them, but to understand them. And sometimes, understanding changes everything.
Stage 1: Recognition
"I've been seeing this pattern, and I couldn't explain it."
Start by recognizing what you already know. The patterns you've been observing are not random, and they're not about willpower or motivation. They're about how nervous systems organize experience under different conditions.
Start Here: The Same Demand
Free PDF (7 pages)
A foundational reading that explores why the same demand produces different outcomes. Through examples from family life, work, and daily living, it asks the question that changed everything: "If the demand didn't change, what did?"
Outcome of Stage 1: "Yes, I recognize these patterns in my family."
Stage 2: Understanding
"Why does this happen? What am I actually seeing?"
Once you recognize the pattern, the next step is understanding what's actually happening. This is where you learn to read nervous system organization instead of only behavior. You discover why access changes, why transitions matter, why co-regulation works.
Understanding Access
Canonical Reading
Why your child can sometimes do something and sometimes can't. Why the same skill varies. Why "try harder" misses the point.

The Framework for Understanding
Four dimensions of nervous system organization:
Conditions: What's present in the environment and body right now?
Organization: How is the nervous system managing those conditions?
Access: What becomes possible or impossible as a result?
Participation: What can happen in this moment?
The same demand placed on a system managing heavy load produces a different outcome than the same demand placed on a system with available resources.
Outcome of Stage 2: "I understand why access changes and what conditions matter."
Stage 3: Support & Practice
"How do I use this understanding to support my family?"
Understanding the framework is one thing. Applying it in daily family life is another. This is where you learn concrete ways to support access, manage transitions, foster co-regulation, and participate more fully in the life of your family.
Reading the Nervous System: Volume II — Workbook
Practical strategies
A clinical workbook designed for observation and practice. Real scenarios. Concrete examples. How to recognize patterns in your own family and adjust conditions to support access.
Communication & Connection
How nervous system organization shapes communication. Why communication varies. How to support expression.
Co-Regulation & Recovery
How your presence and steadiness support nervous system regulation. What co-regulation actually does. How recovery happens.
Transitions & Expectations
Why transitions are difficult. What makes them harder or easier. How to support movement between activities and states.
Participation & Shutdown
How conditions shape what participation is possible. Understanding shutdown. Supporting return to engagement.
Outcome of Stage 3: "I can recognize what's happening in real time and respond in ways that support access."
Stage 4: Community & Connection
"I'm not alone in this. Others are learning too."
Once you've integrated this framework into your family life, the next step is connection. You discover other families reading nervous system organization. You can share observations. You learn from others. You're part of a growing community of people who understand access differently.
All Canonical Readings
Seven different observations showing nervous system organization in different family and life contexts. Each teaches a different aspect of the framework.
Join the Community
Newsletter updates, resources for families, announcements, and a growing community of people learning to read nervous system organization.
Outcome of Stage 4: "I'm part of a community of families and individuals learning to read nervous systems differently."
The Family Journey
This progression is designed to move you from recognizing patterns to understanding them to supporting your family in new ways. Each stage builds on the last. You don't need to move through them all at once — move at your own pace through the framework as it applies to your family's life.
