01Why States Are Not Enough
Opening Observation
He arrives calm. Settled. By ten o'clock he is refusing. By noon he cannot be reached.
The static reading: something happened this morning. He is dysregulated.
The dynamic reading: something has been happening since last Wednesday. Monday morning calm was not the beginning of the story. It was the last available organization before the accumulated cost of the previous week finished closing the margin.
The visible moment was not the origin. It was the endpoint of a process already well underway.
Two Ways of Reading
What state is this person in?
Regulated / dysregulated
Calm / activated
Available / unavailable
The moment is the unit of analysis. What happened here produces what we see here.
What process is this person moving through?
Accumulating / recovering
Narrowing / expanding
Organizing / reorganizing
The cycle is the unit of analysis. What was already being carried shapes what is visible now.
Static readings are not wrong. They describe what is visible. But they cannot explain why what is visible is what it is — because the explanation lives in the process that produced the moment, not in the moment itself.
Core Principle
A living system is not something that is.
It is something that is continuously becoming.
States are snapshots of a process in motion. The cycle — not the state — is the unit of analysis.
Every observable moment — every behavior, every response, every expression of availability or withdrawal — is a snapshot of an ongoing process. The process precedes the snapshot. The process generated the snapshot. Understanding the process is what makes the snapshot legible.
This is not a philosophical claim. It is a clinical one. What you observe now was shaped by what the system was carrying before you arrived.
Mechanism
Every environment places demands on the nervous system — sensory, relational, cognitive, predictive. These demands do not arrive neutrally. They arrive into a system already organized around everything it has been carrying.
The nervous system does not respond only to the present event. It responds from within the accumulated and unresolved signals already present when the event arrives. Organization reflects the full arc — not the last five minutes.
When conditions allow, the system recovers: activation decreases, margin restores, availability returns. When conditions do not allow recovery — when demand continues before the previous cycle has resolved — cost accumulates. The baseline rises. The next cycle begins from a more depleted position.
What is observable at any given moment — behavior, access, participation, withdrawal — reflects where the system currently sits in this ongoing cycle. The moment cannot be understood apart from the arc that produced it.

What process is this person moving through?
This shift changes everything that follows. It changes what you observe, what you measure, what you modify, and where you place clinical responsibility.
When you begin reading process rather than state, the first question becomes: what has this system been carrying before I arrived? The second: what are the conditions currently asking of it? The third: what would recovery actually require?
These questions cannot be answered by observing the present moment alone. They require reading the arc.
Reflection
Scientific Foundations
The observations in this guide connect to several active areas of research. These traditions did not originate the framework — the framework emerged through clinical observation. They arrived later as confirmation that independent lines of inquiry were pointing toward similar organizational principles.
Development emerges from continuous interaction between organism and context across time — not from fixed internal blueprints unfolding independently of conditions. The system and its environment are mutually constitutive.

The nervous system continuously generates predictions about incoming signals based on prior experience. It responds not only to what arrives but to the gap between what was predicted and what occurred. Prior organization shapes every subsequent response.
